Managing Risk in Microfinance: Lessons Learned from the Field
When
This event took place on 8 Nov 2011 from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm.Details
In the last twenty years, microfinance institutions across the globe have grown from small micro-lending organizations into multi-service non-bank financial institutions and banks, able to reach ever larger numbers of people and to provide a wider range of services to their clients. With this success, however, has come a new set of challenges, and as these MFIs have grown, they have had to manage a wider array of risks in their businesses. Some institutions have mitigated these risks more effectively than others, and in some cases, this has made the difference between survival and failure
A new white paper released by the Center for Financial Inclusion and written by Daniel Rozas, “Weathering the Storm: Hazards, Beacons, and Life Rafts,” explores the crisis-management experiences of ten MFIs in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas and will provide the starting point for a discussion among risk management experts Deborah Drake, Karla Brom, Christian Ruehmer, and Janice Abraham, in an event co-hosted by St. John's University, The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. The speakers will discuss the paper’s case studies and will share their own experiences in the field regarding the risk management mistakes MFIs most frequently make and what techniques can make the difference between life and death for an MFI when they do get in trouble.
Some light refreshments will be served.
