Mel Washington

Former CEO / Executive Director of Project Enterprise

Mel Washington is the former CEO / Executive Director of Project Enterprise, a microfinance organization dedicated to providing New Yorkers with training, support and capital to launch and grow their businesses. 

 
Mr. Washington holds an undergraduate degree from Howard University, a Masters in Business Administration from New York University and completed the Administration Executive Education Program at Wharton School of Business. He has held executive level positions in Finance, Operations, and Strategy & Planning in the financial services and telecommunications sectors. His career includes successful stints at top tier firms including AT&T, Salomon Brothers, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase, and Citibank.
 
Mr. Washington’s passion and dedication to the non-profit community led him to a career change and senior level positions at Human Rights First, where he was the Chief Operating Officer, and most recently as Vice President, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer of the EastWest Institute. 
 
Mr. Washington has been actively involved with non-profits throughout his career, and has served on the Boards of several organizations in the New York City Area. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors at Hale House, an organization providing services to children and families in New York City. He has previously served on the Boards of The Children’s Village, where he was Chairman for five years; the Council of Family and Child Care Agencies; and the American Red Cross of Greater New York.  In addition, Mr. Washington was the Co-Founder of the Association of Black Business Students at NYU. Other nonprofit organizations that Mr. Washington has been affiliated with include Junior Achievement, Volunteer for the Arts, New York Foundling Hospital, Inroads, and the NAACP – Black Executive Exchange Program.
 
In 2007, Mr. Washington was profiled in Fortune Magazine and on CNN’s Paula Zahn Show where his years of dedication to the non-profit sector and his transition from the for-profit sector were highlighted.
 
Mr. Washington resides in Manhattan and enjoys the arts, reading, and traveling. He is also an avid competitive runner and cyclist.
