While credit plays an important role in starting & expanding businesses, Microfinance has been criticized as  a “blunt instrument” for development.  This panel discussion will explore how various organizations, funds and MFIs have built on the “lessons learned” from microfinance and are now addressing other aspects of economic development that extend well beyond credit.

Roger Frank

Roger Frank is one of the pioneers in using the capital markets for social change. After 20 years on Wall Street with a focus on emerging markets, he was part of the team that created the first commercial, cross-border capital raise for microfinance.

Dean Karlan

Dean Karlan is a Professor of Economics at Yale University. Karlan is President of Innovations for Poverty Action, a non-profit organization that creates and evaluates solutions to social and development problems, and works to scale-up successful ideas through implementation and dissemination to policymakers, practitioners, investors and donors.

Malik Rashid

Malik Rashid is a Program Manager at BRAC USA. Malik has primary coverage responsibilities to deliver strategic, programmatic, grantmaking, and other services to BRAC's multi-sector programs in West Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. He comes to BRAC after a long career in financial services in East Asia and the US.

John McArthur

John McArthur is the Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Promise. John is also a Research Associate at the Earth Institute at Columbia University where he previously served as Policy Director, and teaches at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs.
